AAMI stadium was conceived in the 1970s, a time in Australian history when sports entertainment was enjoying a renaissance. Christened with the simple title ‘Football Park’, the stadium has been the spiritual home of Aussie Rules in South Australia.
2001 saw the stadium undergo a major facelift – seating capacity was increased to accommodate over 51 000 fans, screens were added to heighten the spectator experience and the old fashioned bench seats were replaced with bucket seating. In 2002 the once humble Football Park was elevated to AAMI Stadium with the injection of crucial sponsorship.
The stadium is home to two AFL teams – fierce rivals the Adelaide Crows and Port rounds and between the months of March and October the stadium is a hive of activity as the AFL season plays out from preliminary rounds to nail biting finals.
