Undeniably one of the grandest buildings of the Golden West region, The Empire Theatre on Neil Street provides Toowoomba residents with the largest regional performing arts centre in Australia.

This majestic venue was first opened in 1911 and served as a silent movie house presenting the evolution of cinema to Australian audiences. These days the acts are a lot louder, live and local – with performers such as Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, Sarah Blasko and Xavier Rudd having all graced the stage here.

Renovated in 1997, the Empire Theatre now effortlessly combines state of the art technology and modern facilities with the charm of its heritage listed art deco architecture and design. The Empire Theatre caters to all tastes and budgets– cabaret, classical music, opera, ballet, musicals, theatre and live music shows are all regularly shown here – and with seating for up to 2400 it is Australia’s largest regional theatre.
