Western Plains Zoo is a wild and wonderful slice of Africa in New South Wales, where we breed endangered animals on the wide open plains.
Like Africa, you’ll see big game roaming free (this is an open range zoo, so you won’t notice bars or fences). Like Africa, you’ll feel a sense of magic and mystery. But unlike Africa, Western Plains Zoo is just hours away from Sydney and the coast. This website has information on places to stay, and tips on how to really enjoy the trip there and back. Luckily, every ticket is valid for two consecutive days. It’s remarkable value and it’s also practical, because there is so much to see and experience.
First of all, plan how you’re going to get around. There’s a loop road and you can drive your car if you choose – but you can walk, bring or hire a bike, or hire an electric cart (four or six seater).
The loop road is 6km, and there are also 15km of bush trails, through picturesque countryside with lakes and waterholes. Western Plains Zoo is only five and a half hours from Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle by car.
